This Week at Thunder Valley…
1st Grade Reading
We have been reading The Family Tree. This story is about a special tree that was left uncut by a boy’s great, great grandfather. Generations later, when the tree is about to be taken down to widen a road, the great, great grandson steps up to make sure that the tree remains.
2nd Grade Reading
Our next story is a historical fiction book about the life of Susan B. Anthony who helped women get the right to vote.
1st Grade Writing
We have been using adjectives to describe nouns in our writing.
2nd Grade Writing
Along with our new informational text we’ll move back into informational writing. We will be researching and then writing about historical figures.
1st Grade Math
Our place value unit is working on reading, writing and understanding numbers to 120.
2nd Grade Math
We are working on reading, writing and understanding numbers to 1,000.
1st Grade Social Studies
Our Great Leaders study had us learning about Ruby Bridges this week!
2nd Grade Social Studies
We have enjoyed our first social studies rotation focusing on comparisons of Past and Present, timelines, and artifacts of Native Americans. Our second rotation will include artifacts of Prospectors and Miners and work on personal time capsules!

Lectura de 1er grado
Hemos estado leyendo El árbol familiar. Esta historia trata sobre un árbol especial que fue dejado sin ser cortado por el tatarabuelo de un niño. Generaciones más tarde, cuando el árbol está a punto de ser bajado para ensanchar un camino, el bisnieto y bisnieto se acerca para asegurarse de que el árbol permanezca.

Hemos disfrutado de nuestra primera rotación de estudios sociales centrada en comparaciones de pasado y presente, líneas de tiempo y artefactos de los nativos americanos. ¡Nuestra segunda rotación incluirá artefactos de prospectores y mineros y trabajo en cápsulas de tiempo personal!

1st Grade Reading
Miss Rumphius sat on her grandfather’s knee in his house by the sea and heard about his travels to far away places. She made him a promise that she would also travel to faraway places, come back and live by the sea and do something to make the world a more beautiful place. Years later, her niece, “little” Alice made her the same promises.
2nd Grade Reading
We are continuing to read through our biography about Theodore Roosevelt. We are learning a lot about this very interesting president and also about many things that were happening at this time in history.
1st Grade Writing
We will be planning and writing a story about what happens next with little Alice, the character from Miss Rumphius.
2nd Grade Writing
Along with our new informational text we’ll move back into informational writing. We will be researching and then writing about historical figures.
1st Grade Math
We’re working on understanding and applying place value in two digit numbers. This will help us as we move on to our next unit of comparing numbers..
2nd Grade Math
We finished our short unit on time and money with a Topic Test today. While we continue to work on these skills in the classroom, it is so important to integrate practice at home as well. Anytime you can have your child count groups of coins or use an analog clock, it will help to build these skills!
1st Grade Social Studies
We began our study of Great Leaders this week with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
2nd Grade Social Studies
Our study of history continued this week as we started a rotation. During this week and next, students are getting the chance to work with each of the three math and social studies teachers as they investigate Native American artifacts, learn facts about the history of the Frederick community and further explore differences between the past and present.
