100 Mile Club We’ve added two additional practice days before our final celebration on the 13th! Friday, May 3rd and 10th will also have afternoon sessions from 3:30-4:30.

1st Grade Reading
We are continuing our learning about The Statue of Liberty and the immigrants who first saw her through a new text called Coming to America.
2nd Grade Reading
This week we have been reading a biography called Seeds of Change. It tells the story of Wangari Maathai who was the founder of the Green Belt Movement and a Nobel Peace Prize winner.
1st Grade Writing
We have been writing our opinions about recess, pets, specials and other topics.
2nd Grade Writing
We are back to opinion writing.
1st Grade Math
We are working on identifying, naming and drawing fractions including halves and fourths (quarters).
2nd Grade Math
We’ve begun working on Data and Graphs. This includes line plots, bar graphs and picture graphs.
1st Grade Social Studies
We’ve begun working on our Jobs and Money unit with a focus on businesses that offer goods and services within our neighborhood.
2nd Grade Social Studies
We’re continuing our work with Geography and will soon be researching countries around the world.

It’s CARNIVAL time!! Our spring carnival is just around the corner and we would love to have your family join us for **FREE** Hotdogs, popcorn, water, music, face painting, games and prizes!! (You may want to bring a blanket to sit and enjoy your dinner.) There will also be Kona ice and additional snacks available for purchase. Bring the whole family for a fun night together!
Thank You!!! We’ve had the opportunity to have some amazing programs come to us this week in preparation for Earth Day next Monday (April 22nd).
Brigit’s Bounty came on Thursday to plant cucumber seeds with the second grade classes. We will be caring for these for the next couple of weeks before returning them to the community garden to continue growing. First graders will also be planting as soon as we can reschedule from our cancelled time on Wednesday.
Eco-Cycle volunteers joined first grade classes this week. We learned more about how and why to recycle on Thursday and made our own recycled paper on Friday. Kids will be bringing these home next week!

This week we began a fictional story about a family heading west. It’s called Going West.

We are using a graphic organizer to write paragraphs about the children we are reading about. Then we’ll use this same organizer to write about a character that we make up.

It’s warming up and afternoon sessions are back!! The schedule through May 9th is Monday and Wednesday afternoons until 4:30 and Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:30. Also, don’t forget to mark your calendar for our end of year ceremony on Monday, May 13th at 6:00pm.

We are following up Emma’s Poem with another book about the Statue of Liberty. Our new text is called A Picnic in October. It’s told by a boy who’s family is going to Liberty Island to celebrate the Statue of Liberty’s birthday.
2nd Grade Reading
We’ve been introduced to several pioneer children in our text Pioneers to the West. We met George Staples who was left with the Sioux Indians when he became ill and couldn’t continue the journey. We met John McWilliams, who at 16, headed west to California in search of gold. We met Laura Ingalls Wilder who later became a famous author and finally, Ruth Chrisman who traveled to Nebraska for the promise of new land.

1st Grade- Our first graders are working so hard to prepare for their Music Program on Tuesday, April 16th at 6:00pm. Please plan to arrive promptly at 5:45. We look forward to seeing you there!!
It’s CARNIVAL time!! Our spring carnival is just around the corner and we would love to have your family join us for **FREE** Hotdogs, popcorn, water, music, face painting, games and prizes!! There will also be Kona ice and additional snacks available for purchase. Bring the whole family for a fun night together!
Hundred Mile Club- It’s warming up and afternoon sessions are back!! The schedule through May 9th is Monday and Wednesday afternoons until 4:30 and Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:30. Also, don’t forget to mark your calendar for our end of year ceremony on Monday, May 13th at 6:00pm.
April Birthdays We will be celebrating April Birthdays on Friday, April 26th. If your child has an April birthday and would like to bring treats, please let his/her teacher know!
This Week at Thunder Valley…
1st Grade Reading
This week we began reading Emma’s Poem. This text tells the story or Emma Lazarus who wrote the familiar poem “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to be free…”
2nd Grade Reading
We began a new text called Pioneers to the West. This informational text tells the true stories of several children who migrated west.
1st Grade Writing
We are going to be writing opinion pieces. When we write an opinion we have to state our opinion and then give reasons to support it.
2nd Grade Writing
We are using a graphic organizer to write paragraphs about the children we are reading about. Then we’ll use this same organizer to write about a character that we make up.
1st Grade Math
We have spent the week working on measurement and comparing lengths.
2nd Grade Math
We are working on using rulers to measure to the nearest inch and centimeter.
1st Grade Social Studies
Students have begun researching their own choice of great leaders with a partner. They will complete a poster of information and a project to share their findings.
2nd Grade Social Studies
We are learning some great facts about six popular U.S. landmarks. Working with partners, students are researching and recording locations and facts about some of our most unique locations.

Es tiempo de CARNAVAL !! Nuestro carnaval de primavera está a la vuelta de la esquina y nos encantaría que su familia se uniera a nosotros ** GRATIS ** ¡Perros calientes, palomitas de maíz, agua, música, pintura facial, juegos y premios! También habrá hielo Kona y bocadillos adicionales disponibles para la compra. ¡Traiga a toda la familia para una noche divertida juntos!

Se está calentando y las sesiones de la tarde están de vuelta! El horario hasta el 9 de mayo es de lunes a miércoles por la tarde hasta las 4:30 y martes y jueves por la mañana a las 7:30. Además, no olvide marcar su calendario para nuestra ceremonia de fin de año el lunes 13 de mayo a las 6:00 pm.
Cumpleaños de abril Celebraremos los cumpleaños de abril el viernes 26 de abril. Si su hijo tiene un cumpleaños en abril y le gustaría traer golosinas, ¡hágaselo saber a su maestro!

Esta semana comenzamos a leer el Poema de Emma. Este texto cuenta la historia o Emma Lázaro, quien escribió el poema familiar "Dame tu cansado, tu pobre, tus masas amontonadas, anhelando ser libre ..."
Lectura de segundo grado
Comenzamos un nuevo texto llamado Pioneros al Oeste. Este texto informativo cuenta las historias verdaderas de varios niños que emigraron al oeste.
Escritura de 1er grado
Vamos a escribir artículos de opinión. Cuando escribimos una opinión tenemos que expresar nuestra opinión y luego dar razones para apoyarla.
Escritura de segundo grado

estudiantes han comenzado a investigar su propia elección de grandes líderes con un compañero. Completarán un póster de información y un proyecto para compartir sus hallazgos.
Estudios sociales de segundo grado
Estamos aprendiendo algunos datos importantes sobre seis puntos de referencia populares en los EE. UU. Trabajando con socios, los estudiantes están investigando y registrando ubicaciones y datos sobre algunas de nuestras ubicaciones más exclusivas.
