Raptor Way!!! Congratulations to first graders Omahr Meraz-Soto, Rylee Guerra and Vanessa Alvarado Martinez; and second graders Raleigh Petla, Sunshine Williamson and Carla Alvarado Martinez on being recognized as our Raptor Way students for October! Santa Cops:  The Firestone, Frederick and Dacono police departments are once again providing gifts and necessities to underprivileged children in the Carbon Valley region. If you would like an application, please let your child’s teacher know. Forms will be accepted until Friday, November 16th.

Safety:   Please help us make sure all students are safe before school each morning by dropping them off at the playground. When the bell rings, they may then go around to the North side of the building if that’s where their class lines up, but they should not be there prior to the morning bell. Thanks for your help!

Halloween: We will be celebrating Halloween next Wednesday, the 31st. Kindergarten through 2nd grade will participate in a costume parade around the building in the morning, then we will have a celebration at the end of the day. Students are allowed to wear their costumes all day as long as they are appropriate for school (no blood, masks, weapons, etc.). If you would like to help provide snacks for our class celebration, please use the link your child’s teacher sent for the Sign Up Genius site. If you have any questions, please let us know!!

It’s getting cold! We are still going outside for recess as long as the temperature (including wind chill) is 20 degrees or above, so please be sure your child is bringing a coat to school every day. If your child does not currently have a coat and in need of one, please let us know as our counselor has some resources to help!

November Birthdays The November Birthday Celebration will be Friday, Nov. 30th. If your child has a November birthday and you would like to send treats, please let his/her teacher know!

1st Grade Reading
Our informational text, Going to School, is teaching us more about school in Australia, Ghana, and Canada.

1st Grade Writing
We are using a graphic organizer called a double bubble to compare and contrast the experiences of the children from our text and then we’re using those to help us write about similarities and
differences.

2nd Grade Reading
We are reading Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday. We have been looking at the decisions made by Alexander and by his, sometimes, “ratty” brothers.

2nd Grade Writing
We have been writing about events in the story and our opinions about the characters. Next we are going to draft our own stories about a character who wants something.

1st Grade Math
We are using the number line, make a 10 strategy and using addition facts to solve subtraction facts.

2nd Grade Math
We are continuing to practice the standard algorithm as the most efficient strategy to add 2-digit numbers within 100.

1st Grade Social Studies
We have begun studying National symbols including the American Flag, Statue of Liberty, Bald Eagle, Mount Rushmore and many more!

2nd Grade Social Studies
Our Economics unit continues with a focus on Needs and Wants and Financial Decision Making.

We are finishing It’s Back to School We Go. Our next text, called Going to School, is another informational text about school around the world.

1st Grade Writing
We are using a graphic organizer called a double bubble to compare and contrast the experiences of the children from our text and then we’re using those to help us write about similarities and
differences.

2nd Grade Reading
This week we have been reading The House on Maple Street. This realistic fiction story is about the changes that happen over time (300 years) to a neighborhood.

2nd Grade Writing
We wrote a paragraph to describe one of the settings from the story.

1st Grade Math
We took our Topic 3 test on addition facts to 20 this week and will now move on to focusing on subtraction facts within 20.

2nd Grade Math
We have explored a variety of different strategies to add two numbers within 100 and are now practicing the standard algorithm.

1st Grade Social Studies
We wrapped up our Geography unit by creating our own maps. Next week will bring a focus on National Symbols.

2nd Grade Social Studies
We are beginning the Economics portion of our Communities unit with a focus on Needs and Wants and Financial Decision Making.
